Mental health resources for LGBTQ+ folks - CoastalDreamer - 15-Aug-2024 I've been struggling with anxiety lately and want to find a therapist who really understands LGBTQ+ issues. I've had some not-great experiences with therapists who were technically "LGBTQ+ friendly" but clearly didn't have much actual knowledge or experience. Does anyone have recommendations for finding good mental health resources? I'm specifically looking for: - Therapists who actually specialize in LGBTQ+ issues - Online therapy options (I live in a rural area) - Support groups or community resources I've heard good things about Pride Counseling but wanted to get some real feedback before committing. Thanks in advance! ? RE: Mental health resources for LGBTQ+ folks - QueerBookworm - 16-Aug-2024 I totally understand the struggle of finding the right therapist. Here are some resources that have helped me: - Psychology Today has filters for LGBTQ+ specialization and you can see therapist profiles - The Trevor Project has a list of affirming mental health providers - PFLAG often has local support groups, even in smaller areas - My local LGBTQ+ center offers sliding scale therapy - might be worth checking if there's one in your region I actually tried Pride Counseling for a few months and had a positive experience. The matching process was good and my therapist was knowledgeable about queer issues. Taking care of your mental health is so important. Proud of you for reaching out! ? RE: Mental health resources for LGBTQ+ folks - SunnyDispo - 18-Aug-2024 Just wanted to add that some universities have LGBTQ+ support groups that are open to community members, not just students. Might be worth looking into if you have a college nearby. Also, don't be afraid to interview potential therapists before committing. Most good ones will do a brief consultation to see if you're a good fit. Sending you positive vibes! ? RE: Mental health resources for LGBTQ+ folks - PrideMountain - 20-Aug-2024 @CoastalDreamer How are you doing with your search? I remembered after reading your post that my therapist mentioned she does video sessions for people in rural areas. If you want me to DM you her contact info, let me know! Also wanted to mention that some employee assistance programs (EAPs) through work can help connect you with LGBTQ+ affirming therapists, if that's an option for you. Hope you find someone great! ? |
