I live in a town of about 15,000 people and we're trying to organize our first Pride event next year. We have a small but growing LGBTQ+ community here, but visibility is still really limited.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience organizing Pride events in smaller communities? What worked? What challenges did you face?

We're thinking of starting small - maybe a picnic in the park or a community resource fair rather than a parade. But we want to make sure we're being strategic about building support and staying safe.

Any advice would be incredible! ?️‍?

This is so exciting! My hometown (about 20k people) had their first Pride event two years ago and it was amazing to see.

They started with exactly what you're thinking - a community resource fair in a local park. They had local businesses sponsor tables, PFLAG was there, mental health resources, etc. It was really well-received and felt more accessible than a big parade would have.

One thing they did was partner with the local library for programming leading up to it. That helped normalize it in the community.

So proud of you for taking this on! ?

Yes! Love this energy!

I'd suggest reaching out to LGBTQ+ organizations in nearby bigger cities. They often have resources or people willing to help with organizing. Sometimes they even have portable booths or materials you can borrow.

Also consider the timing carefully - maybe avoid conflict with other big community events so you get maximum participation.

You're doing important work! ✨
